CEL-FI Builds Industry First Boosters under Safe Harbor 2: More Power, Better Coverage

San Diego, Calif. – February 27, 2013 – Nextivity Inc., is pleased to announce two new Cel‐Fi Signal Boosters, designed specifically for the North American market. Like all of the systems in the Cel‐Fi product line, the two newest variants are Carrier Specific, Smart, Consumer Boosters which are fully compliant with Safe Harbor 2 of the new rules for wireless signal boosters recently issued by the FCC.

On February 20th 2013, the FCC released a Report & Order, thus establishing two Safe Harbors and defining the use of “network safe” consumer boosters on licensed spectrum. The Safe Harbors represent a compromise solution between Technology Manufacturers and Wireless Operators. It is widely considered a landmark decision which was many years in the making. Together with UMTS mobile network operators, Nextivity was instrumental in the definition of Safe Harbor 2.

“Safe Harbor 2 specifically makes provision for much higher gain than consumer boosters developed under Safe Harbor 1. This higher gain enables the booster to produce a significantly larger coverage footprint and the ability to operate at much lower network signal levels. This in turn provides a more predictable and compelling user experience.” said Nextivity CTO, Michiel Lotter. “Legacy consumer booster manufacturers will seek FCC compliance under Safe Harbor 1, which is their only recourse.”

The two new products RS‐224 and RS‐225 will be each be capable of operating in two bands, thus satisfying the needs of tier 1 UMTS Mobile Network Operators in North America. The RS‐224 boosts signals in bands 2 and 4 (PCS 1900 MHz and AWS 2100 MHz); and the RS‐225 boosts signals in bands 2 and 5 (PCS 1900 MHz and 850 MHz). “We anticipate both versions will be rolled out with specific operator approval during the 2nd quarter” Lotter said.
