Tri-band Carrier Aggregation the Latest Piece in the Cellular Broadband Puzzle



The appetite for wireless bandwidth never ends. Which is why we’re seeing announcements like this one from Nokia Networks on tri-band testing.

In an effort to push LTE-Advanced network adoption, Nokia and Qualcomm have put their heads together to join the fray that are testing three band carrier aggregation using 40MHz of spectrum. They claim to have reached speeds of up to 300 Mbps by bringing together one 20MHz piece of spectrum and two 10MHz bands. This means carriers could conceivably work with their fragmented spectrum holdings to deliver high speed wireless services that would be up to the LTE-A challenge.

If it all comes to pass, these speeds will easily present a viable contender to cable, fiber and even Wi-Fi. It could also provide more motivation than ever for households to disconnect from the grid and go all-wireless. After all, 50 to 100 Mbps is good enough for any household to get great video streaming, let alone 300 Mbps.

Right now that might be out of reach from a cost standpoint, but there’s no question that mobile operators on the LTE-A bandwagon will make rates more attractive as the possibilities present themselves.
