Mobile data traffic just keeps on taking bigger bites out of the IP traffic share, according to a recent Cisco Visual Networking Index (VNI) forecast.
In fact projections are that mobile data traffic will account for 67% of all IP traffic in 2019, which is triple its current numbers. The breakdown is as follows: in 2019 14% of monthly IP traffic will come from cellular connections– up from 4% in 2014. The other 53% of mobile traffic will come from Wi-Fi connections (up from 42% in 2014). All of which means fixed IP traffic will drop to 33%.
Some other factoids of interest coming out of the report include:
- By 2019 the number of global M2M connections will more than triple to reach 10.5 billion
- The fastest growing segment will be the connected healthcare consumer one, with 54% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) projected from 2014 to 2019
- The connected home segment will represent 48% of M2M connections by 2019
- Annual global M2M IP traffic will grow 15-fold in that time
So what’s your connection of choice for mobile data: cellular or Wi-Fi?
